PL 8470/207 - Compulsory Register of Cancer Cases in Brazil

THE COMPULSORY NOTIFICATION OF CANCER, BILL PL 8470/207, AUTHORED BY FEDERAL DEPUTY CARMEN ZANOTTO (PPS-SC) WAS SANCTIONED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC, MICHEL TEMER ON JUNE 25, 2018 AND PUBLISHED IN THE OFFICIAL GAZETTE ON JUNE 26, 2018.

This is another important step towards changing the cancer scenario in Brazil.

The new Law No. 13,685, of June 25, 2018, will contribute to ensure the effectiveness of the Law of 60 days (Law 12,732) which determines that the maximum period for the start of treatment of cancer patients is 2 months after the diagnosis of cancer. The Law also establishes that all and any disease and health event related to cancer will have mandatory notification, in public health services (SUS - Sistema Único de Saúde) and private ones throughout the national territory.

According to Carmen Zanotto, author of PL 8470/207, "Mandatory notification is important to speed up the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in the country and allows the identification of bottlenecks in assistance, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the various types of cancer".
