Does breast self-examination replace mammography?

Attention on the importance of mammography!

Self-examination only detects palpable nodules and does not substitute mammography, ultrasound or medical examination.

When can breast self-examination be done?

Take a moment every month to look after yourself. A tip for not forgetting to do the self-exam every month is to use your own menstrual cycle as a reference or choose a fixed day a month to analyze your body. If you prefer, set a mobile alarm clock or stick a post-it note on the bathroom mirror to remind you of the correct date. The important thing is not to forget!

What if you notice something strange in your breast?

If you feel a lump in your breasts or changes in shape, size or skin it is important to see a doctor immediately. Make an appointment and be there on time.

What will be the next step?

The professional will ask you to take some tests. After carrying them out, return to the doctor.

And what will happen after that?

If the cyst that you notice is benign, the doctor should ask for a follow-up over time. This professional will be able to analyse how often you need to have tests and visits to the doctor's office.

In case of breast cancer, the doctor will refer you to the most appropriate treatment.
