Can breast implants cause breast cancer?

Dr Paula Gemignani Soriano

PhD in Radiology from the University of São Paulo Medical School

Recently a possible association was identified between the popularly known breast implants and the development of a very rare type of lymphoma, called anaplastic large cell lymphoma.

This specific type of tumour is mostly related to textured breast implants, although it is extremely rare.

It is important to know that any saline or silicone breast implants can hide and hinder the detection of previously existing tumours in the breast, reducing the mammographic detection of these tumours, although this is not frequent.

There are also indications that silicone implants increase the risk of some autoimmune diseases, cases of stillbirths and melanoma.
